TOXIC
Can Dogs Eat Grapes and Raisins?
Verdict: TOXIC — never feed grapes or raisins to dogs.
All varieties of grapes (purple, red, green, white) and raisins can cause acute kidney failure in dogs. There is no safe number of grapes — even one can be dangerous for some dogs.
Why it's dangerous
Grapes contain tartaric acid, which dogs cannot process. It builds up in the body and can cause acute kidney injury. Raisins are even more concentrated, so they are technically more dangerous than fresh grapes. The toxin is in both the flesh and the skin — peeled grapes are just as toxic.
Symptoms
- Vomiting and/or diarrhea (usually within a few hours)
- Increased thirst and urination (early kidney failure)
- Decreased urination or not urinating at all (kidneys shutting down)
- Loss of appetite
- Lethargy, weakness
- Dehydration
- Bad breath
How much is dangerous?
There is no known safe dose. Some dogs react to a single grape; others seem unaffected. Because you can't predict which dog will be harmed, assume any amount is dangerous. Small dogs are at higher risk from smaller amounts.
What to do if your dog eats grapes
- Call your veterinarian or Pet Poison Helpline (855) 764-7661 immediately — even for one grape.
- Do NOT induce vomiting at home without vet instruction.
- If treated within a few hours, the vet may induce vomiting and use activated charcoal.
- The vet will likely recommend IV fluid therapy and bloodwork to protect the kidneys.
- Hospitalization of at least 48 hours is often needed to monitor kidney function.

My dog ate one grape. Should I worry?
Yes — call your vet or poison control. Not all dogs react, but you can't know in advance, and kidney damage can be permanent.
