TOXIC

Can Dogs Eat Onion?

Verdict: TOXIC — never feed onions to dogs.

Onions belong to the Allium family (along with garlic, chives, leeks and shallots). They damage red blood cells in dogs, which can lead to hemolytic anemia — a life-threatening condition.

Why it's dangerous

Alliums contain compounds that cause oxidative damage to red blood cells. The damaged cells are destroyed faster than the body can replace them, causing anemia. Both raw and cooked onions are toxic — cooking does not remove the danger.

Symptoms

  • Vomiting and diarrhea
  • Lethargy, weakness
  • Pale gums
  • Increased heart rate
  • Collapse
  • Dark or reddish urine (sign of red blood cell destruction)

Symptoms can appear hours to days after ingestion — sometimes up to 3-5 days later.

How much is dangerous?

Toxicity depends on the dog's size and the amount eaten. As a general reference, about 0.5% of a dog's body weight in onions can cause toxicity (e.g., roughly 50g of onion for a 10kg dog). Repeated small amounts over days can also build up to dangerous levels. Onion powder (in baby food, soups, seasonings) is highly concentrated and especially dangerous.

What to do if your dog eats onion

  1. Call your veterinarian or poison control right away.
  2. Do NOT induce vomiting at home unless instructed.
  3. If ingestion was recent, the vet may induce vomiting and give activated charcoal.
  4. Bloodwork is needed to check red blood cell counts.
  5. Severe anemia may require hospitalization, IV fluids and possibly a blood transfusion.

FAQ

Can dogs eat cooked onion?

No. Cooking does not destroy the toxic compounds.

Is onion powder dangerous?

Yes — it's more concentrated than fresh onion. Even small amounts in soups, baby food or seasonings can be toxic.

Can dogs eat chives or leeks?

No. They're in the same Allium family and carry the same risk.

How long after eating onion do symptoms appear?

Usually within 24 hours, but anemia signs can appear up to 5 days later.
