SAFE
Can Dogs Eat Salmon?
Verdict: SAFE — fully cooked salmon is a healthy treat.
Cooked salmon is rich in omega-3 fatty acids, protein and B vitamins — great for a dog's skin, coat and joints. The critical rule: it must be fully cooked. Raw or undercooked salmon can contain a parasite (Nanophyetus salmincola) carrying bacteria that cause salmon poisoning disease, which is often fatal without treatment.
Why it's fine (fully cooked)
Thoroughly cooked salmon kills the parasite and bacteria. Raw salmon from the Pacific Northwest is especially risky. Never feed smoked salmon (too salty), salmon skin with seasonings, or canned salmon packed in oil.
How to serve
- Bake, boil or grill — no salt, oil, butter, garlic, onion or spices.
- Remove the skin and check for bones.
- Flake into small pieces.
How much is OK?
A few flakes a couple of times a week is plenty for a medium dog. Salmon is rich, so keep portions small. Treats should stay under 10% of daily calories.
